The 1936 Bates 40 developed about the same power from a Waukesha 6-cylinder semi-diesel engine. ![]() It was renamed the Caterpillar RD-6 the following year. In mid-1934 the 3-cylinder Caterpillar Forty succeeded the Thirty-Five and had a power output almost exactly the same as the TD-40. The Allis-Chalmers K-O semi-diesel was the same size as the TD-40 but more powerful. In 1934 the TD-40 had no direct competition in size and power it fit between the Caterpillar Thirty-Five and Caterpillar Fifty. The TD-40 was rated at 48 belt and 43 drawbar hp. The McCormick-Deering TD-40 crawler was the same as the TA-40 except for the unique 4-cylinder diesel engine, which started on gasoline and then quickly switched to diesel.
